From cave art of Lascaux to post humanism and all movements in between, we have a great amount of admiration for the arts. Our art handlers have a special relationship with every piece, and we treat all works as if they are priceless.
As a fine art services company based in the PNW, we also keep a pulse on what local artists are up to and creating. Below are just a few of the many impactful projects debuted locally in 2020.
PNW-Based Art
In Portland this past summer, Portland Street Art Alliance identified the need for more female perspectives to be shown off in Portland’s artistic landscape, especially in local street art. Portland Street Art Alliance established the “Ladies Up Mural Project”, bringing five new murals to the Southeast part of the city. The women who were selected for the project were given the creative freedom to produce work that they want to add to their portfolio. The program aimed to support emerging artists, experimentation, and innovation.
Also in Portland, our friends at the Portland Art Museum debuted their Joryū Hanga Kyōkai, or Japan’s Women Printmakers exhibit. These pieces mark a significant time in Japan’s history; when these contemporary etchings, relief prints, and lithographs first went on display in Japan in 1956, it marked the debut of the first printmaking society for female artists. This exhibition presents the careers of the group’s founding members and others who joined in successive years. Many of the works by these female printmakers are now extremely rare.
Seattle native Barbara Earl Thomas’ exhibition “The Geography of Innocence” was also launched this year. The pieces in this exhibit included the history of race and examine the color line, an ever-relevant conversation this year. At the heart of her work is a story of life, death, and hope. Thomas “takes us on a journey where she gives us clues, tracks and traces—the raw elements of the armor, like the one Black parents construct for their children at birth, to help them navigate the perilous landscape that is our country’s color problem.”
We are looking forward to seeing what new works of art emerge in 2021, especially after such a momentous and turbulent year, both socially and politically.
