The Difference Between Climate-Controlled and Heated Fine Art Storage

There may come a time when your artwork needs to take a break from being on display. Here at Art Work FAS, we want to provide you with the comfort of knowing that your artwork will be taken care of while it’s in storage.

Our state-of-the-art storage facilities provides you with a secure location for your artwork away from the elements. Our space is also suitable for both a temporary or long-term stay. When it comes to protecting art during storage, climate plays a vital role. Below, you will find the differences between climate-controlled storage and heated storage so you can determine the right fit for your piece.

Climate-Controlled Storage

Keeping your artwork stored with climate control will protect it from exposure to extreme temperatures, which can introduce unwanted moisture to a piece. In addition, humidity can cause problems such as dimensional change, a chemical reaction, or biodeterioration. Having both temperature and humidity control ensures that your artwork stays safe and secure long term.

Our climate-controlled storage option is available at all three of our warehouses and is optimal for many mediums, sizes, and quantities of artwork. It’s designed to maintain a steady temperature at 68 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, we provide humidity control, which is set to 55% Relative Humidity. These factors are monitored twenty-four hours a day by our team to ensure correct levels are maintained.

Heated Storage

Heated storage, also known as non-climate, is a great option for outdoor sculptures or exhibition furniture. It is also a good choice for pieces that are already comfortable with the climate you will be storing them in.

Our warehouses are located in the Pacific Northwest where the climate is temperate and mild. Here, non-climate storage works well for less sensitive pieces. In areas with more extreme temperatures or humidity shifts, a heated climate option may not be the best choice for storing your piece.
