Lead Art Handler
Overview:
As a Lead Art Handler, you will work directly with Project Managers to plan and execute all aspects of a project including preparation, packing, transport, installation/deinstallation, and registration/storage needs. Leads are hands-on in the field working with and directing our team of handlers through project completion and ensuring client satisfaction. The ideal candidate understands that the safety and security of artworks and of fellow team members is critical to both individual and company success. This role reports to the Operations Manager. All handlers are required to maintain a clean driving record and will regularly be required to drive company vehicles in the immediate region. This role requires detailed knowledge of art handling best practices, museum standards of care, and an in-depth understanding of white glove fine art services. A positive attitude, strong work ethic, proactive nature and professional demeanor are necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Understanding and execution of art handling fundamentals, practices, and safety for a wide range of works and mediums

Installation and deinstallation of works as directed by clients in various settings: residential, commercial, corporate, institutional

Professional installation of work, including use of proper tools and hardware

Direct handlers in the field, assign tasks and roles onsite and ensure client satisfaction during and at completion of jobs

Train and mentor new and junior art handlers in best practices and industry standards

Communicate directly with clients via phone, email, and in person onsite and maintain Art Work’s high expectations for customer service

May provide some recommendations on design and aesthetics when requested by clients

Communicate with project managers, team members and dispatch personnel as needed to efficiently complete requests and update management or clients

Complete required paperwork to ensure accuracy (work orders, inventories, bills of lading, condition reports and other required operational documents)

Drive locally and complete electronic logging as required. CDL license not required. After hours, weekend work and some overnight/travel may be required

Maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations as team lead on projects

Maintain a clean, safe and respectful work environment both at the warehouse and in the field

Must adhere to proprietary agreements: confidentiality, non-disclosure, privacy, security, non-solicitation, and other employment provisions, as required to maintain the utmost in security
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of art handling experience in a museum, gallery, artist studio, private collection, FAS or similar environment
- Minimum of 1-year leading projects and crew
- High level of familiarity with standard museum practices, industry standards, and terminology. An understanding of archival and other packing materials to uphold best practices
- High school diploma/GED required. Bachelor's degree in studio art, museum studies, or related art field is preferred
- Must pass complete background check and be able to complete TSA training to obtain an STA (Security Threat Assessment) number
- Proficiency with hand and power tools
- Working knowledge of outdoor sculpture materials
- Drive fleet vehicles and complete electronic logging as required. Clean driving record is required.
- After hours, weekend work and some overnight/travel may be required
- Clear and effective communication and critical thinking skills
- Ability to carry out work required in lifting and transporting artworks
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, and up to 100
- Basic MS Office suite skills required. Demonstrate understanding and use of both paper and electronic forms, proprietary and operational software
Preferred Experience:
- Forklift certification
- Rigging experience
- Awareness and understanding of mounts, supports and structures. Mount-making or framing experience a plus.
Estimated time in general activities:
- 90% fieldwork
- 10% warehouse/office
Pay Range:
$26-$32hr
This position is an hourly, non-exempt role. This position does not have responsibility for directly managing other employees but will supervise and direct staff working on assigned projects
