Q & A with Director of Operations Sarah Teutimez

Sarah describes herself as “an enthusiastic fine art relations Director of Operations specializing in best practices for handling, packing, and traveling artwork and exhibitions domestically and internationally.” She has collaborated with art professionals for decades, employing creative solutions for their unique needs. Here are her thoughts on her career and the future ahead as she steps into her new role.

Q: Where does your passion for fine artwork come from?

Sarah: My journey started twenty years ago when I decided to study Art History and Museum Studies in school. I fell in love with queer art, feminist art, art that was born during major social movements, and minority representation in the art world.

During my studies, I became enthralled with caring for objects of significance and learning about all the various ways to install and display artwork. I started my career as a museum preparator, then my passion for artwork installation led me to work in fine art logistics for the last fifteen years. To this day, if I am visiting a cool exhibition, I always sneak a peek behind the object to see how it is hung. I think it’s an art to be able to display art beautifully.

Q: What is your favorite part of art logistics?

Sarah: I happen to love spreadsheets, so combing through a well-organized object list is very satisfying for me.

I also love the challenge of figuring out the best, safest, and most economical way to move objects from A to B. It’s a great feeling to perfectly execute a complicated shipment.

Q: What do you love about the Portland fine art scene?

Sarah: As a progressive city it took longer than it should have, but I think Portland has come a long way in giving platforms to Indigenous, Black, and other Artists of Color.

I was blown away by the Hank Willis Thomas retrospective at Portland Art Museum from 2019 to 2020. It was his first major museum retrospective, and such an incredibly eye-opening and inspiring exhibition. On top of all that, it was curated right here in Portland!

Q: What are you looking forward to most when it comes to working with the team?

Sarah: I already know and love the team here at Art Work Fine Art Services. There are so many exciting projects on the horizon for Art Work FAS, and I look forward to working with the team to make amazing things happen.
