The Unique Identity of Seattle Public Art

The art community of Seattle is steeped in reverence for history, diversity, and resilience in the face of adversity. Seattle artists appreciate the origins of the Pacific Northwest, the Indigenous nations, and the industrialization that began the formation of Seattle into the way we see it today.

A strong sense of perseverance and community defines Seattle art. One of our favorite stories to tell about Seattle public art is the effort by artists across the city who created art on top of boarded-up shops when COVID hit its peak in 2020. Even in times of uncertainty, the community of Seattle artists transformed something that was a symbol of hardship into a beautiful and colorful encouragement for the people in our city.

We conducted research to understand the impact of public art on the community and found that many community members believe that public art is crucial for establishing a sense of community and city identity.
