The Do’s and Don’ts of Artwork Installation

When it comes to installing art, you may be able to get away with using a hammer and a nail to hang less expensive paintings and prints around the house on your own. But if you’re seriously looking to ensure the preservation and safety of your pieces, larger measures need to be taken. Each step taken during installation is important, especially for fine art pieces. In the end, it’s best to hire a professional who has the right experience, tools, equipment, and manpower to get the job done the right way.

We’ve broken down some important do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when installing your fine art.

Don’t: Cut corners when installing your art. An easy-way-out may ruin your piece.

Do: Esure that all the proper steps are taken so that your art is installed safely and securely. This includes using the proper tools, equipment, materials, and finding the right location.

Don’t: Force pieces through a doorway or other entrance where the art may not fit. This may damage your art before you even begin the process of installation.

Do: Hire an experienced art handler who will use specialized equipment and processes in order to find and use the proper access point.

Don’t: Try to install or move heavy pieces on your own. You can risk damaging your art or injuring yourself in the process.

Do: Transport and install heavier pieces using rigging or cranes to lift.

Don’t: Rule out displaying your art at greater heights. When you attempt an installation by yourself, your options may be limited.

Do: Hire teams like Art Work FAS that are experts when it comes to heights requiring scaffolding, lifts, or working in stairwells.

Don’t: Ignore the importance of location. This is another sure way to damage your piece and risk the safety of others.

Do: Pay attention to if the artwork needs a special mount, such as earthquake proofing, or UV protection. If it’s outdoors, it may also require weatherproofing.

And our most important tip…

Don’t: Attempt to install valuable, fine art by yourself.
